Summer 2024 Construction Forecast

Several construction projects planned for summer 2024 and beyond will affect motor vehicle traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians. Click the map on the right for more details.

UW Hospital and Clinics D2 Module

Impacts expected through summer 2024:

  • Construction project will be staged in parking Lots 133 and 134. Vehicle access will be maintained.
  • A section of sidewalk on University Bay Drive will be closed just west of Lot 134.

BRT Installation (City of Madison)

Impacts expected through summer 2024.

  • The far-right eastbound lane of Campus Drive will close starting at University Bay Drive and reopen where Campus Drive intersects (old) University Avenue, east of the Wisconsin Energy Institute.

Camp Randall Sports Center Replacement

Impacts expected through summer 2024 are to be determined. Check back for updates.

Engineering Drive Utilities

Impacts expected from July 1, 2024 through August 2024.

  • Sidewalks closed on both sides of Engineering Drive from Engineering Hall park to Engineering Mall. Pedestrians follow detour signage on site.
  • Access to Engineering Hall and Engineering Research will remain open.
  • Access to Lots 14, 17, and 114 will remain open.
  • Temporary road will be installed to shift vehicle traffic around the construction site.

BRT Installation (City of Madison)

Impacts expected from May 13 through August 2024.

  • A section of W. Johnson Street between Randall Avenue and Charter Street will be reduced to one lane.
  • Orchard Street will remain closed.
  • The right turn lane from Randall Avenue to W. Johnson will be closed.
  • The far-right traffic lane of University Avenue will be closed in front of the Medical Sciences Center for half a block beginning at Charter Street. This closure will join an existing closure of the far-left lane, reducing University Avenue to one lane in front of the Medical Sciences Center.
  • The westbound bicycle lane on University Avenue will close in front of the Medical Sciences Center. Cyclists traveling westbound should avoid University Avenue and consider detouring along W. Dayton Street or Linden Drive.
  • The eastbound contraflow bicycle lane on University Avenue will remain closed, but protected bicycle facilities will remain open to bicycles traveling east.
  • There will be multiple sidewalk and crosswalk closures on Johnson Street and University Avenue.
    • Both crosswalks at the University Avenue / Orchard Street intersection will close. Pedestrians may cross University Avenue at Charter Street or Randall Avenue.
    • Marked pedestrian detours will be available in front of Union South.

CDIS Construction

Impacts expected to last through December 2024.

  • Left lane of University Avenue closed from Park Street to Orchard Street. Protected temporary walkway and bike path available around work area.
  • Northern Johnson Street traffic lane and sidewalk closed from Orchard Street to Charter Street. Protected walkway available on Johnson Street around work area.
  • Orchard Street closed from University Avenue to Johnson Street. Detour via Randall Avenue or Charter Street. Accessible sidewalk available along Orchard Street.
  • Lot 22 permanently closed.

Linden Drive and Chamberlin-Sterling Hall Utility Renovation

Impacts expected from June 1 through July 2024.

  • Work areas will be located in Lot 115 and Lathrop Drive.
  • Lot 115 will close.

Observatory Drive Masonry Project

Impacts expected from May 13 through August 2024.

  • Observatory Drive will fully close between Lots 9 and 10 from May 13 to 31.
    • On June 1, the area will reopen to eastbound traffic only during peak travel periods, and will otherwise remain fully closed during off-peak travel times.
  • Parking lot 9 (near Science Hall) will remain open for accessible parking only. Permit holders will be relocated.
  • Parking lot 10 (near the Education Building) will remain open to permit holders.

Irving & Dorothy Levy Hall (Letters and Science Building construction)

Impacts expected through 2025.

  • Northern lane and sidewalk of Johnson Street closed from Davis Residence Hall to Park Street.
  • Right lane, bicycle lane, and eastern sidewalk of Park Street closed from Johnson Street to Clymer Place.
  • Clymer Place closed from N. Brooks Street to Park Street.
  • Lot 61 permanently closed.
  • Lot 112 permanently closed.

Water Utility Project (City of Madison)

Impacts expected to last from June 1 through July 2024.

  • Northbound lane of N. Lake Street to close from W. Johnson St. to University Ave. Southbound lane will remain open.
  • Work area will extend into University Avenue, causing the southern sidewalk of University Avenue and contraflow bicycle lane to close. Pedestrian and bicycle detours will be in place.

Kohl Center Addition

Impacts expected to last through 2024.

  • Lots 78 and 88 closed.

Fluno Center Plaza Deck Waterproofing and Repair

Impacts expected to last from May 15 through June 2024.

  • Single lane of University Ave. will close from N. Frances St. to N. Lake St.
  • Protected temporary walkway will be available in front of Fluno Center.

Parking Garage Development (City of Madison)

Impacts expected to last from May 15 through June 2024.

  • Single northbound lane of N. Lake St. will close from University Ave. to State St.
  • Southbound lane of N. Lake St. will remain open.
  • Protected temporary walkway and bike path will be available around work area.
