This fall, the UW–Madison campus will have an updated EV charging program, including new charging stations that will include tap-to-pay functionality and ChargePoint app integration. To comply with state regulations, the new stations will require users to pay a fee in addition to parking permits and visitor parking costs.
Upgrades to the charging network will begin August 3 and continue through the month. Crews will work on specific parking lots each week to replace existing chargers. Newly installed stations will be brought online after installation and setup are complete.

EV chargers will be temporarily unavailable.
Chargers in each designated lot will be unavailable for approximately one week two weeks* during replacement. EV drivers are encouraged to check the project schedule to plan ahead, and use PlugShare (app or website), their vehicle app, or other preferred service to find alternate charging locations during the planned outages. Please note that visitor rates may apply when parking in UW campus garages.
These regulations will take effect when the new stations are brought online:
- A charging session will cost $1.50 per hour, plus a $0.49 access fee (or a $0.29 access fee with a ChargePoint account).
- The current four-hour parking limit for EV charging spaces will no longer apply.
- Vehicles parked in EV charging spaces must be plugged in and connected to an active charging session at all times, even after the battery is fully charged. Fees apply for the entire session.
- Payment will be accepted through the ChargePoint app or the tap-to-pay function on the charging station.
- Fees for EV charging are separate from standard parking fees. Vehicles in EV charging spaces must also be in paid parking status with a valid UW permit or visitor parking payment as required by lot enforcement rules.
Transitioning campus EV chargers to a paid model is due to the State of Wisconsin 2023 Acts 121 and 122, which require all new EV stations to be user-paid.
The revenue from the new stations will be used to pay for the EV chargers and the electricity they use.
The plan to update the campus EV charging program was announced by Transportation Services in May 2026.
