A railroad crossing replacement project will close Highland Avenue near Campus Drive beginning Friday, October 9 and expected through Tuesday, October 13. Anyone traveling on this part of Highland Avenue will need to take an alternate route around the work zone.
Roadway and sidewalk impacts
- Highland Avenue will be closed between Campus Drive and the main Veterans Hospital intersection. All drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists should detour to Walnut Street or University Bay Drive.
- Southbound drivers on Highland Avenue must U-turn at the Veterans Hospital intersection.
- The Campus Drive off-ramps will be open, but traffic must detour to Walnut Street instead of using Highland.
- For east and west pedestrian and bicycle traffic, the Campus Drive Path will stay open.
- Metro Transit buses will also follow detours around the work zone. Riders should check the Metro Transit website closer to the project dates for route detours and temporary stop locations.

Exiting UW Hospital Ramp (Lot 75)
To speed up Lot 75 exits and minimize delays, pay your ticket before returning to your vehicle by using a pay-on-foot machine or scanning the ticket QR code on your phone. Pre-paying eliminates the payment transaction at the gate, allowing you to scan your ticket and go.
To limit backups and keep traffic moving during the closure, please use the assigned exit for your payment type unless otherwise instructed:
- Prepaid tickets, validations, and UW permits: Use the lower-level exit (north side of the garage) which leads directly to the Observatory/Highland intersection.
- Cash or credit card: Use the level 1 exit (east side of the garage). Turn right onto Highland Avenue and U-turn at the Veterans Hospital intersection.
