Highland Avenue sewer project to affect parking at UW Hospital Garage (lot 75)

Stage 2 of the Highland Avenue sewer project, which begins June 30, will affect employee, patient, and visitor parking at the UW Hospital Garage. Traffic control measures will be in place in the ramp and on Highland Avenue to minimize delays for vehicles exiting the garage.

In addition to these parking impacts, roadway closures will cause detours and travel delays to and from University Hospitals and the west side of the UW-Madison campus. Click here for recommended routes to and from the affected areas.

Pre-paid* tickets, UW permits, and credit cards use lower-level exit

The lower-level exit is located on the north side of the garage. This exit leads directly to the Observatory/Highland intersection.

* Parking tickets are pre-paid if the fee is paid before reaching the lot exit. This includes:

  • Validations
  • Receipts from pay-on-foot machines.
  • Tickets paid by phone. Use a mobile phone to scan the QR code on the parking ticket and follow the prompts to pay by credit card.

Cash payments use level 1 exit

The level 1 exit is located on the east side of the garage. Cash payments are accepted at the parking booth located at garage exit.

Drivers exiting from level 1 will be required to turn right on Highland Avenue, then make a u-turn at the intersection with the Veterans Hospital entrance to head north on Highland. The usual median crossover for northbound traffic will be closed as part of the traffic management plan. Traffic lanes and the signal at the Highland/Veterans Hospital intersection will be adjusted to help reduce delays.

How you can help

These small but meaningful actions can make it easier for everyone to exit the garage.

  • Be prepared with payment. Accepted forms of payment include credit / debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover), cash, validations, and UW parking permits.
  • Pay your ticket in advance. This best way to reduce waiting times at garage exits. Use a pay-on-foot machine, or scan your ticket to pay by phone on your mobile device right before getting in your car to leave the garage.
  • Follow the signs. Signage in the garage will direct drivers to the lower level and level 1 exits.
  • Use the barcode scanner to scan your original parking ticket, then follow the prompts on the screen to complete the transaction. Refer to the photo on this page.
