UPDATED 8/30/18 – Work on W. Johnson Street is now expected to last through September 21. This will cause additional delays on football game days. Drivers should expect delays. Alternate traffic routes are recommended.
Charter Street project — After several delays, the project is back on! A steam project on N. Charter Street will begin Monday, August 6 (delayed from July) and continue into late November 2018. N. Charter Street will be closed to two-way traffic between W. Johnson Street and Lot 22 from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. From 2:30 p.m. – 10 a.m. there will be a lane of one-way southbound traffic. The east Charter Street sidewalk will be closed, but the west sidewalk will remain open during this project.
Vehicles should use N. Mills Street or another parallel street between 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Lot 22 will be accessible during the project, but only via University Avenue to N. Charter Street or southbound from N. Charter Street.
Lot 55 will be closed for the duration of this project and will remain closed through the construction of a Chemistry building addition, expected to be finished by the end of February 2021. Permit holders have been relocated to Lot 20 (University Avenue Ramp) until the end of this parking year (August 31)–permit holders have been emailed information directly.
W. Johnson Street project — A city of Madison project working on the sanitary sewer at W. Johnson and N. Charter Street will close two lanes of traffic on W. Johnson Street at a time. The project begins August 6, with all four lanes expected to reopen September 21. The sidewalk will remain open on at least one side of W. Johnson Street at all times.
