With the Highland Avenue sewer project entering its third stage, travelers heading toward the west campus area can expect relief as some roadways begin to reopen.
The southbound lanes of Highland Avenue underneath the Campus Drive overpass, closed since late June, will reopen July 22.
The westbound Campus Drive off-ramp will reopen in early August. Campus Drive will once again be open to traffic heading toward University Hospitals and areas of campus west of Babcock Drive.
The westbound Campus Drive on-ramp will remain closed through September 6.
Madison Metro Transit buses will continue to detour. Check Metro’s website for detour information.
Dates and project plans are subject to change due to weather and other factors.

Recommended outbound routes
Vehicles leaving campus may head north on Highland Avenue, circle around the hospital, continue along University Bay Drive, and turn either right onto University Avenue or left onto Campus Drive.
Alternatively, those heading eastbound may drive south on Highland Avenue and turn left on Old University Avenue.
Refer to the map on this page for details.
Exiting UW Hospital Ramp (lot 75)
Traffic control measures currently in place in lot 75 will remain active through September 6, when the project is complete:
- Pre-paid parking tickets, UW permits, and credit cards must use the lower-level exit located on the north side of the garage (unless otherwise instructed). This exit leads directly to the Observatory/Highland intersection.
- Those paying for parking in cash are being asked to use the level 1 exit, located on the east side of the garage. This exit leads to Highland Avenue.
The Campus Drive on-ramp will remain closed through September 6, which will affect outbound traffic heading west. Drivers are still advised to use an alternate recommended route to leave the area. Refer to the map on this page for details.
