N. Charter Street is closed to two-way traffic between W. Johnson Street and University Avenue between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. The total closure hours have expanded from the previous 10 a.m. -2:30 p.m. time period. One-way southbound traffic is available during evening and early morning hours, but traffic delays can be very heavy. Alternate routes are encouraged.
Madison Metro routes 11, 27, 28, 38, and 44 detour via Randall Avenue due to issue safety turning on to W. Johnson Street. Transit detour information available on the Madison Metro website. Vehicles should use N. Mills Street, N. Orchard Street, or another parallel street in place of N. Charter Street.
The closed area is expected to reopen by late November 2018. The east Charter Street sidewalk is closed; the west sidewalk is open during this project.
- Lot 22 is accessible during this project, but only via University Avenue to N. Charter Street or southbound from N. Charter Street (above University Avenue).
- Lot 55 is closed for the duration of this project and will remain closed through the construction of a Chemistry building addition, expected to be finished by the end of February 2021.
Reminder of ongoing City of Madison work on W. Johnson Street: (Update 9/28/18) All lanes of W. Johnson Street near Charter Street have reopened.
