UW Transportation Services will host the League of American Bicyclists courses Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101 (May 21) and League Cycling Instructor Seminar (June 10-12).
These events will take place at the WARF building, 610 Walnut St., Room 132.
League Cycling Instructor Seminar
League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) are ambassadors for better biking through education. After earning certification through a three-day, League coach-led seminar, LCIs teach bicycle safety classes to children and adults.
Registration for the three-day LCI seminar June 10-12 costs $500 until May 13, with an additional $75 late fee from May 14-20 (total $575). Registration will close May 20.
The seminar will be held Friday, June 10, 5-9 p.m.; Saturday, June 11, 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; and Sunday, June 12, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Participants must have an individual membership to the League of American Bicyclists.
Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101
“Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101” is a fast-paced class that provides cyclists with the confidence to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. It is a pre-requisite for the League Cycling Instructor seminar, but other riders might enjoy it as well. The course covers the basics of bike maintenance, rules of the road, on-bike skills, and crash avoidance techniques. There is a classroom discussion about safe riding techniques, on-bike parking lot skills practice, and a ride on local roads.
The “Smart Cycling” course on May 21 will be held from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Registration costs $50 and closes May 16.
Alternatively, there are two upcoming local “Smart Cycling” offerings that each individually fulfill the LCI pre-requisite requirement. This option consists of four two-hour sessions, held each Thursday from April 7-28 at MSCR East, 4620 Cottage Grove Rd., Madison. An evening course is for ages 14 and up, or an afternoon course is directed to participants ages 50 and older. The cost is $25 (resident) or $38 (non-resident).
