Road closures and detours starting the week of May 16

Upcoming construction projects will cause lane closures on Charter Street, Walnut Street, and University Avenue/University Bay Drive. The closures impact vehicles, bicycles, buses, and pedestrians traveling to and from campus. Project dates are subject to change due to weather and other factors.

Charter Street closure, starting May 16

Charter Street north of the University Avenue/Charter Street intersection will close in both directions May 16 for construction work expected to last through early June.

Inbound traffic can detour via N. Park Street, Babcock Drive or Highland Avenue. Outbound traffic can detour via N. Park Street or Highland Avenue.

Madison Metro transit routes 11, 38, 44, 80, and 84 will detour starting May 16 and continue through the end of August. Stops on Charter Street, Linden Drive, Babcock Drive, and eastbound Observatory Drive will be closed. Detours may change throughout the summer. Visit the Madison Metro website for details and a map.

The southbound lane of Charter Street will reopen in early June. The northbound lane will remain closed due to additional construction work, with a full reopening date to be determined.

Walnut Street partial closure, starting May 16

The southbound lane of Walnut Street is closing between the Observatory Drive roundabout and the West Campus Cogeneration Facility for construction work expected to last through the summer.

Traffic heading south toward University Avenue can use Highland Avenue as a detour route during this closure.

Vehicles traveling northbound on Walnut Street may turn right onto Linden Drive from Walnut Street. Vehicles may also access the School of Veterinary Medicine by traveling through Lot 59 from Observatory Drive.

Route 82 serving Walnut Street will detour. Details are forthcoming. Visit the Madison Metro website for up-to-date bus detour information.

University Avenue and University Bay Drive lane closures, starting May 18

Northern lanes along University Drive between Shorewood Hills and Campus Drive, and lanes on University Bay Drive, will close May 18 for a City of Madison construction project. Traffic lanes will be open in both directions during peak hours, but congestion and delays can be expected. It is recommended that vehicle traffic detour via Highland Avenue.

The closure will also impact Madison Metro Transit routes and cause Metro Transit and park and ride shuttle stop closures. Details are forthcoming.
